Support VNA’s mission by volunteering your time and talent

Volunteer_FCN-Brochure---cribbageVNA relies on the help and support of many volunteers in a variety of capacities. If you are interested in lending your talent and time to support VNA’s mission, please consider one of these interesting opportunities:

Office Volunteer

VNA headquarters has a busy office setting. Opportunities for interested volunteers include assisting with mailing, medical record filing, special projects, and copying and collating materials to be used with VNA patients, staff, and the public. Most office volunteers volunteer 2 to 4 hours per week on a regular schedule, although some are “on call” for special projects.

Volunteers must submit an application, interview with the Volunteer Coordinator, complete a background check, health screening, provide documentation of auto insurance, and agree to our agency policies.

Hospice Volunteer

Every day of life is precious. As a hospice volunteer you will experience first hand how the VNA Hospice Team helps our clients live their final months, weeks, and days as fully and comfortably as possible. You will be part of a team working to provide a family with the best quality of life possible during a difficult time.

Direct Service Hospice Volunteers visit clients in their homes and offer non-medical support. Providing respite for caregivers and companionship for the client are the most frequent requests of our hospice volunteers. Practical help with transportation, errands, dishes, laundry, and walking the dog are a few of the other ways our volunteers have helped.

Direct Service Volunteers must complete a 24-hour hospice volunteer training, offered twice a year at our office in South Portland. Volunteers often say the training is a remarkable personal growth experience as we learn about hospice, work on communication skills, explore our own personal death awareness, discuss family dynamics and spirituality, and learn about comfort measures and about grief support – all elements of our holistic approach to care. We ask for monthly reporting of service provided. Once assigned to a hospice client, we ask for a minimum commitment of two hours per week.

Hospice Office Volunteers help with clerical tasks including mailing, filing, copying, data entry, and maintaining our library.

All volunteers must complete an application, interview, background check, satisfy health requirements, provide proof of automobile insurance, and agree to our agency policies.

Prayer Shawl Volunteers

Our Prayer Shawl volunteers meet from 4:00 to 6:00 on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month at VNA to work on our projects together. This group has been meeting since November 2009 and welcomes new members.

The following appears on cards attached to our shawls:

Merciful Creations
May God’s Grace be upon this shawl.
Warming, comforting, enfolding and embracing.
May this mantle be a safe haven,
A sacred place of security and well being…
Sustaining and embracing
in good times as well as difficult ones.
May the one receiving this shawl
be cradled in hope,
Kept in joy, graced with peace and
wrapped in love.

Please feel free to join us at our Monday meetings.
